Who We Are and What We Do
The Erie County Conservation District (ECCD) was established over 50 years ago and has become a leader in addressing environmental concerns. Our mission is to set an example and provide assistance to citizens in Erie County for wise use, management, and development of our natural resources by addressing conservation issues through education and outreach.
Each conservation district in Pennsylvania is governed by a volunteer board of directors. ECCD has seven directors from throughout Erie County. Six of the directors are nominated by county wide organizations that have a direct interest in the conservation and wise use of the counties natural resources. The seventh director is the county executive.
ECCD is a natural link between local, state and federal entities. Outstanding partnerships have been formed between resource people, educators, local government and concerned citizens. It is our philosophy to use a voluntary approach to solve natural resource problems. Our continued emphasis has been placed on problem-solving through cooperation.
Headwaters Conservation Park and the Natural Resource Center
At the NRC, we can advise citizens of Erie County first hand how to conserve the natural resources of the Commonwealth. Headwaters Conservation Park is utilized by ECCD, partners and the public for a multitude of programs and opportunities. The trails make for an easy hike for small children, families and students. The access points to the headwaters of Mill Creek are perfect for stream side educational activities.
New to the park is educational signage that illustrates more than 15 key points located on the park and in the NRC, including many examples of best management practices. Headwaters Conservation Park and the Natural Resource Center are working examples of how naturalness and conservation can exist within an industrial or developed setting.
